Our Vision

Provision of world class health services in Nigeria.

Mission Statement

To provide customer friendly and innovative services in which every
client counts and every staff member matters.

Since its inception, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology has, in line with the vision of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, been engaged in the training of medical students and resident doctors. There are currently 13 Honorary Consultants in 4 areas of sub-specialization and 23 resident doctors (11 senior registrars and twelve registrars).
Training of medical students and resident doctors was recently enhanced with the acquisition and installation of 2 ultrasound machines, CTG (cardio-tocograph) machine, laparoscopes, hysteroscopes, 10 Doppler machines for use in labour and colposcope.
The Department is among the few centers worldwide involved in the World Maternal Antifibrinolytic Trial (WOMAN) in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The trial, being supervised by the ethical review board of the UITH, is now actively enrolling patients. The Department has also been engaged in training on post abortal care, in collaboration with the IPAS International of United States of America in the last three years.
The Department has a working arrangement with the WALS (World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeon, Nigeria Section), Laparoscopic Hospital, New Delhi, WALS International to organize a laparoscopic training programme for gynaecologists later this year.
We are hopeful that some of our worthy academic staff will be elevated to the full chair soonest. This will no doubt improve our rating and capability amongst our peers. We envisage improving to full scale surgical endoscopic surgeries in most of our gynaecological surgical operations. An assisted reproductive centre is also being planned with a view to increase the level of intervention offered to infertile patients. This centre when operational, will expedite action on the proposed Masters programme on clinical embryology (M.Sc Clin. Embryol.) This will make the UNILORIN/UITH one of the few centres in the world offering this programme. The prospects of a Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis facility (PGD) will be made a reality with this Centre.
Also, the unit of fetomaternal medicine will be strengthened through the commencement of this centre. This will take care of prenatal diagnosis as well as treatment of intrauterine conditions amenable to treatment. The simulation laboratory in the pipeline is also expected to increase our capacity to train more personnel on life saving skills in obstetrics and gynaecology.
